Class 1 FAQs

General Program Questions

What is the Class 1 Learning Pathway?

The Class 1 Learning Pathway began in Alberta on April 1, 2025. It consists of four programs:

  • Entry Program (40 Hours) - Self-directed online learning covering foundational knowledge
  • Core Learning Program (60 Hours + 8-hour air brake training) - Practical instruction through licensed driver training schools such as the North Peace Commercial Driving Academy.
  • Competence Building Program (17-25 hours) - Additional training delivered through licensed driver training schools, tailored to address individual needs identified in road tests.
  • Experience and Equivalency Program - A shorter pathway for experienced drivers from Alberta or other provinces delivered through licensed driver training schools.

How long does the Class 1 training take to complete?

The Entry program can be completed on your own time, at your own pace. The Core Learning program takes approximately eight days in addition to a two-day air-brake course. The Competence Building program is 17-25 additional hours of tailored instruction.

Included below is a break down of how many days are required to complete various aspects of the driver training program.
